Traditional Selwyn Chalet began as a charming 1939 cottage of just 1,000 square feet. The owners wanted to preserve the character of the original home, so the front façade was left essentially unchanged.
Instead, Artistic Contractors expanded the home from the rear, following the existing roof slope so the addition felt natural from the street. Approximately 2,300 heated square feet were added, dramatically increasing the home’s living space while maintaining the character of the original cottage.
Inside, classic architectural details meet a cleaner, more contemporary approach. Traditional moldings and cabinetry are finished in light colors, giving the interiors a bright and open feel. Large entertaining spaces use cased arch openings to provide definition without closing the rooms off.
The finishes continue that balance of old and new. A butcher-block countertop and clawfoot soaking tub bring traditional character, while Carrara marble adds a refined modern touch to the master shower and kitchen countertops.
The result is a carefully expanded home that respects its 1939 origins while providing the openness, functionality, and finishes of a modern residence.
