Floating staircases are becoming more and more popular these days in new custom homes. There are endless possibilities when building a home and that is certainly true with choosing a staircase design.
A floating staircase is basically exactly what it sounds like. The treads, or platforms you stand on, look like they are floating or attached to nothing at all. They are actually attached with steel beams coming out from one side of the wall. The structural element is very tough to pull off so make sure to use a professional when taking on this type of project.
A lot of times there is not even a riser, or a vertical piece that connects each tread to each other. This just intensifies the floating effect. To push the affect even further, some homeowners choose to not use a handrail either. This gives a true effect of walking on floating platforms.
